Winner of the 2005 T.S. Eliot Poetry Prize, Mona Lisa Saloy reads from her award-winning collection Red Beans & Ricely Yours. Chosen in January, long before Hurricane Katrina, the book describes the lives and culture of black New Orleans, turning folk sayings into polished verse, vibrant with local history. The poetry judge, Ishmael Reed, has said “Ms. Saloy’s book might be the last will and testament of a great city.”

New Letters on Air: Salman Rushdie {29:00}
Widely known for his novel The Satanic Verses and the resulting fatwa issued against him by the Ayatollah, Salman Rushdie says his biggest regret about the book is that most people did not realize it was a comic novel. Henry Cowell talks about his life and plays examples of his music from his entire career as a composer—a fascinating document. He mentions the diversity interests from his childhood, giving up violin at age 8, hearing Irish tunes hummed by his father, early American Ozark mountain tunes sung by his mother. Living in San Francisco, he was exposed to international influences, playing and humming along with his Japanese, Chinese & Tahitian playmates.

New Letters on Air: Gary Soto {29:00}

Gary Soto talks about his early beginnings as a poet, and as a poor Mexican-American kid growing up in Fresno, California. Soto has written more than 70 books, however he has stopped writing adult poetry to focus exclusively on writing books for children and young adults. In this interview, Soto reads from his poetry collection One Kind of Faith, and his book of essays, The Effects of Knute Hamson on a Fresno Boy, his novel Amnesia in a Republican County, and his latest collection of short stories, Help Wanted.
